All baptized persons are invited
to serve as acolytes. Acolytes help to conduct worship
by carrying such things as the cross, candles, banners,
and service books, and by assisting the deacon or
priest in setting the table at the Eucharist. Usually,
acolytes at EHS wear a red cassock and a cotta; on
special feasts, the crucifer (the acolyte who carries
the cross) and the acolyte acting as subdeacon may
wear instead an alb and a tunicle. There are acolytes
in all three divisions of the school.
The Altar Guild is a group
of parent volunteers who assist in the physical preparation
of the chapel space for worship, particularly before
celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. Among other things,
they wash, iron, and repair the altar linens and vestments.
They also provide the doughnuts and hot chocolate
or lemonade after weekly optional Eucharists!
Eucharistic Ministers are
confirmed Episcopalians in good standing in their
home parishes who are licensed by the Bishop of the
Diocese to the special ministry of administering the
consecrated Bread and Wine at the Eucharist when there
are not enough bishops, priests and deacons present
to do so. Students, faculty and parents all act as
LEMs at EHS. Confirmed Episcopalians who would like
to serve as LEM's are invited to speak to the Chaplain.
LEMs may or may not vest: when they so, they wear
a red cassock and a full-length surplice.
The lessons in our public
worship (other than the Gospel at the Eucharist) are
ordinarily read by students or faculty--in the Middle
School, readers volunteer by homeroom; in the Upper
School, the Chaplain maintains a roster of student
and faculty volunteers. (top of page)
