Seventh
and eighth grade students of Spanish are invited to join the Middle School Spanish
club and participate in various activities with a Hispanic-American theme throughout
the year. Elected officers and class representatives help plan and carry out these
activities which generally take place monthly during the school day. A small dues
is paid to cover costs of refreshments and supplies. Money also goes toward a
service project, which is occasionally supplemented by bake sales or other fundraising
activities. Our latest service project has been to raise money for Episcopal sponsored
orphanages in Honduras. Fall semester activities have included celebrating
National Hispanic Month which begins in September with Mexican Independence Day
and ends with El Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) in October, El Día de los Muertos
in November, and La Navidad in December. Spring semester activities include El
Año Nuevo (New Year) and El Día de los Reyes Magos (The Epiphany) in January,
Carnaval, Valentine’s Day or Jalapeño Day in February, Semana Santa in March or
April, El Día de la Tierra in April, and finally Cinco de Mayo in May. |
